BioBlitz 2015 Event at Southwinds Golf Course Receives Award from Audubon International

Body

Southwinds Golf Course was recently honored by Audubon International for having the most participants in the recent BioBlitz 2015 campaign.

Audubon International’s BioBlitz 2015 campaign, which was held April 19 through 25, challenged golf courses to engage their surrounding communities and local wildlife experts to identify species of plants and animals on the course grounds. In total, more than 3,560 species were identified during the week-long campaign on the 29 golf courses that participated.

Audubon International Director of Advancement Joe Madeira traveled to Boca Raton to present Southwinds with a custom print commissioned by the organization as an award for the most participants in the BioBlitz 2015 event. The course had 49 community members participate in its identification process. In conjunction with course superintendent Peter Arvanitis and staff from Palm Beach County Parks and Recreation Nature Centers, community members found more than 200 species of plants and animals on course at Southwinds.

“We are very pleased to present Southwinds with this honor,” said Madeira during the presentation. “The effort that the staff at Southwinds undertook to get so many volunteers involved in identifying such a large number of species really speaks to the great job that Southwinds in particular, and all of the Palm Beach County golf courses in general, are doing to educate the public on environmental practices at the various golf courses.”

Southwinds was particularly distinctive as the course was the only public golf course to win one of the four honors handed out by Audubon International during its BioBlitz 2015 campaign.
