Friends of Daggerwing Nature Center, Inc. (FOD) announced that the inaugural Scott Cowan Memorial Scholarship has been awarded to Anna (Anya) Al-Salem. Anya, a 2018 graduate of Olympic Heights High School, received the $500 award to pursue advanced studies in the environmental sciences. She will enter Leiden University College The Hague in the Netherlands this fall to study earth, energy, and sustainability.

Anya has been an exemplary student, dedicated environmental activist, and committed, proactive volunteer at Daggerwing Nature Center since July 2016. She is a greeter, presents the alligator feeding and lecture, and has organized and curated climate change themed art exhibits at Daggerwing Nature Center in both 2017 and 2018, among her many volunteer endeavors. FOD and nature center staff are pleased to recognize Anya and wish her success as she pursues her academic and personal aspirations in the future.

Initiated in 2017 by the Cowan family, Friends of Daggerwing Nature Center established the scholarship this year to recognize outstanding young volunteers at the nature center and promote their future environmental education goals. “All of the applicants were outstanding students and had remarkable personal qualities,” said Edith Cowan, President of FOD, and mother of Scott Cowan. “We hope to continue and expand our recognition of Daggerwing volunteers who personify the qualities that will enable them to make a difference in the way we protect and conserve the earth.”
