Friends of Daggerwing Nature Center, Inc. (FOD) announced the 2021 Scott Cowan Memorial scholarship has been awarded to Mallory Thomas.

Mallory became a butterfly garden volunteer at the nature center in 2020. She is currently enrolled in a rigorous academic program at Florida Atlantic University (FAU), pursuing both her high school diploma (FAU High School) and a challenging undergraduate course of study at FAU. She has already been recognized for her undergraduate scientific research achievements and endeavors. Mallory will continue her studies in environmental engineering at FAU this fall.

Initiated in 2017 by the Cowan family, FOD established this annual $500 scholarship to recognize outstanding student volunteers at Daggerwing Nature Center and promote their future educational goals. “We hope to both continue and expand our volunteer scholarship program to recognize and celebrate these young volunteers who make a valued contribution to our nature center,” said Edith Cowan, President of FOD, and mother of Scott Cowan for whom the scholarship is named.

“Mallory is very deserving and I am excited to learn that she won the scholarship award this year,” says Sean Mallee, Daggerwing Nature Center Manager.  “She is an extremely committed volunteer who dedicates her time to help beautify the nature center’s butterfly garden. The butterflies and our guests are rewarded with her efforts all year long and it is heartwarming to know she has earned this prestigious scholarship to continue her academic goals. We appreciate all of the volunteers at Daggerwing Nature Center and are fortunate to work with such giving individuals!”

Scholarship contributions to the Scott Cowan Memorial Fund can be donated to Friends of Daggerwing Nature Center, Inc.
