County Declares Day After Thanksgiving ‘Family Day’

Body

On Tuesday, June 15, the Palm Beach County Board of County Commissioners declared the Friday after the Thanksgiving holiday as ‘Family Day’ in Palm Beach County, making the county only the second jurisdiction in Florida to formally observe Family Day.

On Family Day, residents and visitors are encouraged to visit parks and open spaces and participate in outdoor experiences, which provide a broad range of opportunities for family members to bond with one another. Businesses and local merchants are also encouraged to host family-friendly activities and promotions that boost and stimulate the economy.

Families are critical to the health, well-being, and vibrancy of all communities and Family Day will build upon the County’s ongoing efforts to support family-oriented events, experiences and destinations.

“For many years we have encouraged families to visit their parks and recreation areas during the Thanksgiving holiday and take advantage of the many opportunities to connect and celebrate with one another,” said Eric Call, Palm Beach County Parks and Recreation Department Director.

Family Day was initially established in 1979 in Arizona with the purpose of bringing families together to appreciate one another. Since then, many other states and nations have observed Family Day.

The Palm Beach County Parks and Recreation Department, recognized nationally for excellence in park and recreation management, operates more than 110 parks and recreational facilities and provides organized recreational programs and services for people of all ages and abilities.
