The innovative Living History program showcases the Battles of the Loxahatchee through character and battlefield re-enactments inside Loxahatchee River Battlefield Park, the site of two Second Seminole War Battles in 1838; the program also educates thousands of residents and visitors annually about early pioneer life in Palm Beach County through free docent-led tours at the DuBois Pioneer Home.

“We have quite a history here in Palm Beach County and I am very proud of our staff who interpret, showcase, and maintain these historical gems for park visitors to enjoy,” said Eric Call, Director of Parks and Recreation.

One of the department’s core services is to promote stewardship of natural, archaeological and cultural sites. The unique resources entrusted to the department are critical to building a sense of community, equitably sharing historical narratives, and fostering an appreciation of traditions, stories, beliefs, and values.

The National Association of Counties (NACo) strengthens America’s counties by serving nearly 40,000 county elected officials and 3.6 million county employees. Founded in 1935, NACo unites county officials to advocate county priorities in federal policymaking, promote exemplary county policies and practices, and nurture leadership skills and expand knowledge networks, among other priorities.

The Palm Beach County Parks and Recreation Department, recognized nationally for excellence in park and recreation management, operates more than 110 parks and recreational facilities and provides organized recreational programs and services for people of all ages and abilities.
