The Palm Beach County Parks and Recreation Department (PBC Parks) was selected by the Florida Recreation and Park Association (FRPA) as the recipient of the 2022 FRPA Public Relations Award for their Nature Adventure Journal.

FRPA’s Public Relations Award is presented annually to the agency significantly impacting the public’s awareness and recognition of public parks, recreation and leisure services programs through marketing and public relations.

The Nature Adventure Journal was designed in house by the Office of Public Engagement Team and printed through the Public Affairs’ Graphics Division during a time when in-person recreation programming was still limited due to concerns of COVID. The goal was to get kids outside and active in a natural setting through a variety of fun activities, including animal spotting, leaf tracing, making an outdoor bucket list and more. With distribution to nearly 6,000 participants so far, the journal is helping to develop future stewards of our natural resources by helping people of all ages explore the world around them, whether or not they have a park nearby. It also heightens public consciousness, the linkage of parks and recreation to Florida’s health, economy, environmental sustainability and a sense of community and place at a level that can be recognized by children through fun and rewarding activities. 

Distribution partners include science classes at local public schools, youth camps and county libraries to ensure greater access to the free publication. Nature Adventure Journals can be found at Palm Beach County operated nature centers and libraries and at the John Prince Park Administrative Offices, located at 2700 6th Avenue South in Lake Worth.
