The Palm Beach County Parks and Recreation Department’s 50th Anniversary Commemorative Book was recently recognized as a winner in the 2023 American Inhouse Design Awards by Graphic Design USA (GDUSA). The annual award is a premier showcase for outstanding work by inhouse designers and their departments.
In 2022, the Parks and Recreation Department launched a yearlong celebration to commemorate the department’s milestone anniversary and produced a 50th Anniversary Commemorative Book. The 244-page publication was designed in house by the department’s Office of Public Engagement and printed by the Graphic Division within the County’s Public Affairs Department. It encompasses an overview of the park inventory and employees, and is threaded with historical details collected over the last 50 years.
While the 50th Anniversary Commemorative Book began as an idea to produce a historical snapshot, it evolved into a graphically impressive historical encyclopedia – both a commemorative and a valuable resource, celebrating the growth, diversity, and impact of the department across half a century. Completed around the time former director of the Parks and Recreation Department, Eric Call, was retiring, the commemorative book was dedicated to his nearly 39 years of service. The commemorative book was also preserved in a time capsule and distributed to department employees and county administrators to consummate the anniversary celebration.
