Loxahatchee Battlefield Listed in the National Register of Historic Places

Body

On April 5, 2024, the National Park Service listed Loxahatchee Battlefield in the National Register of Historic Places, officially recognizing the historic significance of the site, available for public visitation within Loxahatchee River Battlefield Park in Jupiter.

Loxahatchee River Battlefield Park stands as a crucial historic landmark tracing back over 5,000 years to the Archaic Period. Indigenous people lived on and cared for the land over many millennia. The headwaters of the Federally designated Wild and Scenic Loxahatchee River flow through the park. The now Federally designated historic site witnessed two battles in January 1838: Powell's Battle and Jesup's Battle, considered pivotal moments in the Second Seminole War. Loxahatchee River Battlefield Park and Riverbend Park preserve this heritage while offering educational and recreational opportunities. The public is encouraged to visit the park to learn more about history and all those who lived on, fought on, and perished in conflict on this significant site.

“The National Register of Historic Places designation for the Loxahatchee Battlefield has been a long time effort, involving many people, to bring to light the full history and significance of this special place. The Seminole Tribe of Florida, Loxahatchee Battlefield Preservationists, Inc. and the Florida Black Historical Research Project, Inc. all worked with our Palm Beach County team and contributed to the successful nomination. The Town of Jupiter and the State of Florida also provided tremendous support in the nomination process. We are thrilled as the current stewards of this special place to see the designation on the National Register of Historic Places.”  said Jennifer Cirillo, director of Palm Beach County Parks and Recreation.

Loxahatchee River Battlefield Park and Riverbend Park are operated by the Palm Beach County Parks and Recreation Department. The department is recognized nationally for excellence in park and recreation management and provides organized recreational programs and services for people of all ages and abilities.
