March 2017 Program Guide at Okeeheelee Nature Center

All programs are by reservation only, unless otherwise stated.  Please call (561) 233-1400 or visit the nature center to make program reservations. Please make reservations at least 2 days in advance.  Fees (if applicable) are due upon arrival to the program. All participants are required to sign a Program Participation Form for every program. If you are more than 5 minutes late to a program you have made a reservation for, your spot will be given to a person on the waiting list.

SCIENCE for SENIORS – ECOLOGY OF MICROBES
Tuesday, March 7, 9:30 a.m.
Ages 50+, $5/participant (Reservations required)
Join special guest speakers Dr. Peter McCarthy and Hunter Hines from the Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute for an in depth look at what is happening in local freshwater systems on the microscopic level. This program is designed for adults and is approximately 1 hour.

DEER & RAPTOR WALK
Saturday, March 11, 10:30 a.m. 
Ages 6+, $3/participant (Reservations required)
Go on a “behind the scenes” tour of the deer and raptor compounds for an opportunity to see the animals up close and learn about these unique creatures. Please note: This program is not stroller or wheelchair accessible. Program length is approximately 1 hour.

STORY TIME – TURTLE TIME
Tuesday, March 14, 10:30 a.m. 
Ages 2-5, $2/child (Reservations required)
In honor of the start of sea turtle nesting (March), the first story time in March is all about turtles! Meet some resident shell-tastic animals and enjoy turtle themed stories. Story time is designed for children ages 2 - 5 years and program length is approximately ½ hour.

ARCHAEOLOGY MONTH LECTURE –REMOTE SENSING IN ARCHAEOLOGY 
Saturday, March 18, 2:00 p.m.
Adults, FREE (No reservations required)
In celebration of Archaeology Month, guest speaker Jessica Baker provides insight into how researchers go about locating sites within Palm Beach County when most are covered with sprawling developments or treacherous swamp. This discussion will cover the methods that experts have used in Palm Beach County, how remote sensing can further our understanding of the ancient inhabitants of South Florida and where technology in the field is heading. This program designed for adults and is approximately 1 hour.

ARCHAEOLOGY MONTH LECTURE – PREHISTORY OF PALM BEACH COUNTY
Tuesday, March 21, 9:30 a.m.
Adults, FREE (No reservations required)
In celebration of Archaeology Month, guest speaker Andrew Schneider from Florida Atlantic University is providing a special look back in time to the prehistoric side of Palm Beach County. This program is designed for adults and is approximately 1 hour.
 
ARCHERY FOR BEGINNERS
Wednesday, March 22, 9:30 a.m.
Ages 8+, $10/person (Reservations required)
Learn the basics of archery from safety to shooting and develop a great new skill during this 2-hour program. Equipment is provided, and space is limited. Please wear close-toed shoes, and bring water and sun protection.

Explore the world of Florida’s reptile – the alligator! Enjoy gator-themed stories and the chance to meet resident juvenile alligators up close and personal. Story time is designed for children ages 2 - 5 years and program length is approximately ½ hour.

NATURE WALK
Saturday, March 25, 10:30 a.m.
Families/All ages, FREE (No reservations required)
Go on a FREE guided nature walk through the Pine Flatwoods forest and learn about the plants and animals that live right here in the local community.
