Condo Gardening Tips

September 2006

By Gene Joyner, Extension Agent
Palm Beach County Cooperative Extension Service

This month many things are getting more than enough moisture since we generally get nine inches of rain during the month of September. Make sure that landscapes are checked carefully because we often see increases in diseases in turfgrass areas as well as ornamental shrub beds.

Next month many properties will start to put in fall bedding plants so don’t jump the gun and do it too early. Most properties wait until mid October to start putting in impatiens, begonias and other fall and winter bedding plants. With the threat of hurricanes and tropical depressions this month and early next month, it’s a good idea to hold off on any large scale planting for a few more weeks.

In October we will have our fall condominium field day, but the site has not been picked yet and you will receive a mailing as to the location, but it will be in the south county area. These field days are good educational opportunities to see typical problems in condo landscapes and hear some solutions for correcting them. It’s also a good place to bring board members or landscape committee members to educate them about condo landscape problems.

If you have questions on your landscape or have problems that need addressing, you can always call the Extension office for free advice. Dial 233-1750 in the north and central county area or 276-1260 in the south county area.
