Herb Gardening
June 2006

This month we should finally begin our regular rainy season and most gardens should look at lot better as soon as the rain gets under way. If we have continued dry conditions, make sure herb gardens are irrigated on a regular basis to sustain normal growth.
This is a good time for controlling weeds before they get a head start with the upcoming rains. Use mulches wherever practical in the garden 3 to 4 inches deep and even if you have herbs in containers you have to watch weeds since they often will start to offer a lot of competition if not kept pulled out.
If you want to propagate herbs, this is a good time for propagation either by seed or by cuttings and some herbs now because of the high temperatures need to be taken out and others more heat tolerant put in their place.
If you have questions about winter maintenance in your herb garden, check with fellow members at monthly meetings or your local county Extension office.
