Rose Gardening
July 2006
This time of year most people should have excellent growing conditions now that we’re getting somewhat regular rainfall. If you want to do any major cutbacks or heavy pruning now is a good time to do that. Make sure, too, that you’re fertilizing lightly but frequently because as we get more regular heavy rains fertilizers will be leached out quickly.
Weeds can be a common problem during the summer months in rose gardens so use heavy layers of mulch wherever practical to help slow down weed competition.
If you notice increased insect activity, particularly sucking pests such as aphids, these aren’t a major threat but if they reach high populations you can use insecticidal soap or similar products to reduce the population levels.
If you have questions about rose care at this time of year, check with fellow members at monthly meetings or the local county Extension office.
