21st Annual Citizens Criminal Justice Academy to Start on Sept. 25
The Academy was created by the CJC to educate Palm Beach County citizens, businesses, government leaders and other interested parties about the criminal justice system and to introduce residents to local criminal justice professionals. The course will cover all aspects of the criminal justice system and provide a general knowledge of the system from local criminal justice professionals. The six-week course will be held at the West Palm Beach Police Department, located at 600 Banyan Avenue in West Palm Beach, FL. There will be a special welcome during the first session from Palm Beach County Chairperson Addie Greene, West Palm Beach Mayor Lois Frankel and West Palm Beach Police Chief Delsa Bush. The event will be held in conjunction with the Youth Criminal Justice Academy, which also kicks off on September 25. There will also be numerous tours at criminal justice locations in the county, including the Main Detention Center. In addition, there will be presentations from the Palm Beach Sherriff’s Office Mounted Unit, PBSO Helicopter Unit, Medical Examiner’s Office, the Crime Scene Investigator, and other criminal justice officials. The academy is limited to the first 50 persons who register before Sept. 23. Interested parties can register in person at the Criminal Justice Commission, 10th floor, Governmental Center, 301 N. Olive Ave, West Palm Beach, or by faxing the application to 355-4941. The

Belle Glade First-Graders to Receive Free Swimming Lessons
According to the Palm Beach County Medical Examiner’s Office, eight percent of all drowning incidents that occur in Palm Beach County take place in the Glades area. With drowning being the second-leading cause of unintentional injury for children ages 1 to14, the Drowning Prevention Coalition has taken a proactive approach to preventing water-related injuries by implementing a Schools and Pools program. Over a four-week time period, approximately 130 kindergarten and first-grade students will receive between six and eight swimming lessons that last 35 minutes each. Upon successful completion of their swimming lessons, Principal Peggy Back Nelson will host an ice cream/cake party where each student will receive a special certificate of participation. Lessons continue for first-graders through October 3 from 10:55 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Pioneer Park Aquatic Center in Belle Glade.
Animal Care & Control Offering Low-Cost Rabies Clinic
The cost is $15 for a rabies vaccination, tag and microchip. All dogs must be on a leash and cats in a secure carrier. No cardboard boxes. For more information, call (561) 233-1271 or 1272, or check the shelter Web site at www.pbcgov.com/pubsafety/animal.
