Come to the “Spokes and Other Folks” Social Handicap

The Palm Beach County Parks and Recreation Department will host a “Spokes and Other Folks Social” at the Club Managers Association of America (CMAA) Therapeutic Recreation Complex in John Prince Park on Wednesday, November 12, from 5:30-7:30 pm.

Participants will learn about Therapeutic Recreation programs, meet new people, voice opinions and test drive a handcycle. Other activities will include wheelchair weighing, interactive games, and a discussion on how to prevent pressure sores.

The CMAA Therapeutic Recreation Complex is operated by the Palm Beach County Parks and Recreation Department and is located at 2728 Lake Worth Road, in Lake Worth. Palm Tran Wins at FPTA Conference

Bus

Palm Tran, Palm Beach County’s public transportation system, was the recipient of several honors at the 2008 Annual Conference of the Florida Public Transportation Association (FPTA).

Palm Tran’s Marketing Department received first-place Awards of Excellence for the exterior design of the Going Green Bus and for the tri-lingual Palm Tran-101 Travel Training Video.  An Award of Honor was earned in the special events category for Palm Tran’s Celebration of Going Green.

Palm Tran mechanic Kevin Jackson was recognized as second runner-up for 2008 FPTA Mechanic of the Year.  Jackson has been with Palm Tran for 12 years and is an expert in repairing all systems on transit buses.

Additionally, Palm Tran received the second-place Unit Safety Award for transit systems operating more than 100 buses.  This is the 11th consecutive year that Palm Tran has been recognized by the FPTA with either a first or second-place award for safe operations.

Palm Tran’s Executive Director Chuck Cohen was elected to serve as Board Chairman of the FPTA for the 2008-2009 board year. FPTA’s 34th Annual Conference was held October 19-21 in Sarasota, Florida.

VSA arts of Florida to Host Third Annual “An Art Affair” Charity Event

The Palm Beach County chapter of VSA arts of Florida will host the third annual "An Art Affair" charity event on Friday, November 14, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Atlantis Country Club in Atlantis to fund VSA arts of Florida, Palm Beach County's community arts programs for children and adults with disabilities.

The charity event will feature an evening of cocktails, hors d'oeuvres, live music, and a silent auction showcasing themed gift baskets and artwork created by local artists, faculty, students and friends of Palm Beach County’s VSA arts of Florida. Cost is $40 per person or $70 for two people (inclusive of a non-profit donation).

Founded in 1981 by the Florida Department of Education and the Florida Department of State, VSA arts of Florida brings the arts into the lives of people all over the state and creates a society where people with disabilities can learn through, participate in and enjoy the arts.

Volunteer at Mounts Botanical Garden

Have fun and learn while helping the Mounts Botanical Garden grow by becoming a Mounts Botanical Garden volunteer. Whether you like getting your hands in the soil, prefer office work or like the excitement of working special events, there are volunteer opportunities for every interest.

  • Horticultural volunteers:  Help in all aspects of garden maintenance,
    from planting and grooming to maintaining plant records. Learn while
    you work hands-on at Mounts Botanical Garden.

  • Special event volunteers: Work with the public or behind the scenes
    to support Mounts' exciting special events, including the finest plant
    sales in Florida, fun and educational children's events, fund
    raising events and more. Help with decorations, collecting admissions,
    supervising children's games and crafts, or answering the public's
    questions about Mounts Botanical Garden.

  • Membership volunteers: Support the Garden by pitching in with
    membership activities, including bulk mailings, copying, data entry,
    and other office work. You may also assist with the New Member Welcome
    Party, Annual dinner or signing up new members at special events.

  • Mounts bookstore volunteers: Help the public find the information they
    need in one of South Florida's best specialty book stores. Preview the latest
    in South Florida gardening books while you work.
