![]() Martin Millar CJC member Councilman Martin Millar was elected to the South Palm Beach City Council in 2005. After a long career in both the police and fire departments he is now retired, with honors, from both services. He began his career in law enforcement in 1970, as a police academy graduate from the Jersey City Police Academy in Hudson County, New Jersey. He served as patrol officer and retired from the North Bergen Police Department as detective. His career in the fire department spans from 1975 to 1996, where he served as firefighter and acting Captain with the North Bergen Fire Department. Councilman Millar moved to South Palm Beach in 2000, after retiring as account executive from Barneys New York where he had served as Vice President of Local 340, Unite NYC, simultaneously to his fire department service. He became active in local public service affairs by first serving on the 50th Anniversary Committee of South Palm Beach as parade coordinator and was subsequently elected to the city council. As a member of the Florida League of Cities, he serves on the Florida Municipal Legislative Council, a body that addresses the issues of affordable housing throughout the State of Florida. Councilman Millar is also a member of South Florida Shomrim Society, an organization of public safety officers of the Jewish faith, and was instrumental in providing support services to his fellow firefighters who served in 9/11. He spoke movingly on this subject at the All People's Temple, in Broward County, shortly after the tragic events occurred. He is also a member of the Ner Tamid Society, an order of New York City firefighters of the Jewish faith, the Fraternal Order of Police Associates, Local 19, of Palm Beach, and former member of the New Jersey State Police Benevolent Association and the International Association of Firefighters. Councilman Millar is married to his lifetime partner, Libby Zivick Millar, who devoted her career to serving children with disabilities. She retired from Columbia H.S., in Maplewood New Jersey, as a special education teacher and currently volunteers with United Way and the Palm Beach County Public School system.
