Palm Beach Police Department

Police Chief Michael Reiter is  responsible for directing the activities of the Palm Beach Police Department, a nationally and state accredited 138 member organization serving 19,000 full time and 40,000 seasonal residents. Chief Reiter began as a uniformed patrol officer and has held every rank and nearly every position in the Palm Beach Police Department during his twenty-eight years of service.  He has been Chief of Police for the past eight years.
 
Chief Reiter serves on the Executive Board of the Federal Bureau of Investigation Joint Terrorism Task Force and has been the vice-chairperson of the Palm Beach County Domestic Security Committee since its establishment by the Palm Beach County Commission.  He was the operational commander for the Town of Palm Beach during the landfall of Hurricanes Frances, Jeanne and Wilma and for the mass recovery effort that followed.  Additionally, he was the chairperson of the Palm Beach County Presidential Election Security Task Force and chairperson and moderator of the Palm Beach County Law Enforcement Leadership Summit.  Because of his interest and knowledge of the history of Palm Beach, Chief Reiter has been appointed by the Palm Beach Town Council as the coordinator of the Town’s Centennial which will occur in 2011.

As President and Chief Executive Officer of Palm Beach Crime Watch, Inc., Chief Reiter leads a non-profit civic agency that is one of Florida’s oldest and most successful crime prevention organizations.  The mission of Palm Beach Crime Watch, Inc. is to achieve crime prevention, domestic security and emergency preparedness through community partnerships.  The Palm Beach Citizens and Teen Police Academies, Volunteers in Police Service (VIPS) and the Town of Palm Beach Emergency Response Team are among its many successful programs.

Chief Reiter has earned a Master of Science in Human Resource Development from Palm Beach Atlantic University, a Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice from Florida Atlantic University, an Associate of Letters, Arts and Sciences from The Pennsylvania State University, and is a graduate of Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government Program for Senior Executives in State and Local Government. Chief Reiter is also a graduate of the Federal Bureau of Investigation National Academy in Quantico, Virginia, the United States Secret Service Dignitary Protection Program in Washington, D.C. and the Southern Police Institute Administrative Officers Course at the University of Louisville.

Demonstrating his commitment to the advancement of the law enforcement profession, Chief Reiter has published articles and lectured internationally on the topics of leadership, domestic terrorism, crisis management and the investigation of high technology crime.

Chief Reiter is the recipient of numerous commendations and awards including the Distinguished Alumni Award from the Palm Beach Atlantic University Catherine T. MacArthur School of Leadership, the Worth Avenue Association Above and Beyond Award and the Town of Palm Beach Employee of the Year.

During Chief Reiter’s eight years as Chief of Police, serious crime in Palm Beach has been reduced by 32.04% and overall community satisfaction of the Palm Beach Police Department has been consistently measured to exceed 90%, one of the highest approval ratings of any law enforcement agency in the country.
