ERM's Contamination Cleanup and Monitoring Section is responsible to ensure
cleanup of soil and groundwater contamination from petroleum and petroleum products.
Regulation of petroleum contamination is provided by Palm Beach County Ordinance 2009-018 as adopted under Chapter 62-770, Florida Administrative Code and Chapter 62-777, Florida Administrative Code.
The primary responsibility of the Contamination Cleanup and Monitoring Section
is to provide the technical oversight, management, and administrative activities
necessary to prioritize, assess, and clean up sites contaminated by discharges
of petroleum and petroleum products from stationary petroleum storage systems.
These sites include those determined eligible for state funded cleanup using
preapproval contractors designated by the property owner or responsible party
and state lead contractors under director contract with the Florida Department
of Environmental Protection (FDEP), as well as non-program or voluntary cleanup sites
that are funded by responsible parties. To view a description of the various state funded
petroleum cleanup programs available, click here.
There have been approximately 1,490 petroleum contaminated sites reported in
Palm Beach County. Eight-hundred thirty-nine of these sites have been cleaned
up or otherwise completed. There are approximately 248 sites currently being
cleaned up, and 403 still require cleanup.
