Mouse over the icons above for a quick fact about that topic.
Risk Watch™ is a school-based curriculum that links teachers with community safety
experts and parents. The curriculum is divided into five age-appropriate teaching modules.
Pre-K/Kindergarten
Grades 1-2
Grades 3-4
Grades 5-6
Grades 7-8
Developed by the
National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Website with co-funding from the
Home Safety Council™ and in collaboration with a panel of respected safety and injury
prevention experts, Risk Watch™ gives children and families the skills and knowledge needed
to create safer homes and communities.
The Risk Watch™ curricla meets the Florida Sunshine State Standards for Language
Arts, Health and Physical Fitness, and supports the Florida Comprehensive Achievement Test (FCAT).
Palm Beach County Fire Rescue provides local schools with the curriculum and student workbooks
as a tool for the teachers to use to reinforce injury prevention. Teachers may also request a
Fire Safety Specialist to conduct classroom presentations on these subjects. Law Enforcement
officers typically do presentations in the schools to educate students on the dangers of firearms.
If you are looking to include the entire school in a presentation (versus individual classes),
you are in luck! We can accommodate the entire student body of your school with our
Injury Prevention Stage Shows and
Fire Safety Stage Shows that we offer in an assembly format.
The curriculum is divided into 5 lessons which address the following topics:
Bike/Pedestrian/Playgournd Safety and Fall Prevention

This lesson is designed to remind children of the rules of the road when riding bicycles and walking along
roadways. Crossing intersections, proper helmet fit, and hand signals are just a few of the highlights of this
class. We also discuss general playground rules and how to prevent falling during ordinary activities
and common tripping hazards that lurk in the home. If time permits, games and activities are implemented to
help reinforce the subject matter. Class duration ranges from 30 minutes to one hour.
Choking, Suffocation, and Strangulation Prevention

Here students learn the difference between the three main causes of airway injuries and important prevention
tips. If time permits, games and activities are implemented to help reinforce the subject matter. Class
duration ranges from 30 minutes to one hour.
Firearms Injury Prevention
Law Enforcement officers typically do presentations in the schools to educate students about the dangers of
firearms.
Fire Safety and Burn Prevention
Motor Vehicle Safety

The Motor Vehicle Safety Lesson focuses on the importance of proper seatbelt use in
vehicles and essential bus safety rules. If time permits, games and activities are
implemented to help reinforce the subject matter. Class duration ranges from 30 minutes
to one hour.
Poisoning Prevention

The Poisoning Prevention lesson enables children to identify common poisons found inside and outside
the home. From popular household chemicals to harmless looking plants and flowers we educate children on
such dangers that lurk in their environment and important safety rules to remember. If time permits,
games and activities are implemented to help reinforce the subject matter. Class duration ranges from
30 minutes to one hour.
Water Safety and Drowning Prevention

This presentation focuses on common water safety rules and drowning hazards that lurk inside and outside the
home, on land and in the water. Students are taught safety rules to live by when boating, playing at the
beach, lake, or swimming pool, and even when on the ice. The subject matter and lessons are customized to
meet the needs of the students' age levels. If time permits, games and activities are implemented to help
reinforce the subject matter. Class duration ranges from 30 minutes to one hour.
