The primary role of Network Security Services is to protect the Palm Beach County network from malicious attack from inside or outside the organization. This is accomplished in several ways including, intrusion detection services and firewalls.
The ISS Intrusion Detection System is a software tool used to detect unauthorized access to a computer system or network. An IDS is composed of several components: sensors which generate security events, a console to monitor events and alerts that control the sensors and a central engine that records events logged by the sensors in a database and uses a system of rules to generate alerts from security events received.
Firewalls protect PBC-networked computers and other resources from intentional hostile intrusion that could compromise confidentiality or result in data corruption or denial of service. Several types of firewall techniques are used to manage traffic entering and leaving the network including: packet filtering, application gateway, circuit-level gateway and proxy server.
