District 6 Commissioner Jess Santamaria held his monthly community forum on March 18 at the original Wellington Mall. The format was a bit different, as attendees were invited to speak about any topic or issue pertaining to the western area. A select panel was on hand to respond to county-government related questions. The group included Deputy County Administrator Verdenia Baker, Planning, Zoning & Building Executive Director Barbara Alterman, Solid Waste Authority Executive Director Mark Hammond, Morton Rose of Engineering/Roadway Production and Hassan Hadjimiry from Water Utilities.
Issues presented by the public included potable water rates, false-alarm permit fees, the proposed PBCC campus in Wellington, future land capacity, water quality and storage, the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan (CERP), rock mining, the pending U.S. Sugar land purchase, roads and traffic, the new FPL plant near 20-Mile Bend, a proposed western county landfill, and the need for more public transportation for the disabled.
About 80 residents attended the 2 ½-hour open discussion.
