BCC Briefs

At the May 16, 2006 Board of County Commissioners meeting, the board took the following action:

PBIA Parking – awarded a $61.6 million construction contract to contractor James A. Cummings, Inc. to build a second long-term parking garage to accommodate increased passenger growth. The project is being constructed utilizing bond proceeds.

Water Utilities – increased the membership from 10 to 11 representatives on the Water Utilities Advisory Board in order to provide the County’s newly acquired service area—the Village of Royal Palm Beach—with representation. The village council will select the representative.

Callery-Judge Grove – rescheduled the continuation of the Callery-Judge Grove DRI-related Comprehensive Plan amendments from 2 p.m. to 9:30 a.m. at the BCC Zoning Commission meeting on May 25th.

Working Waterfronts – postponed decision to allow ad valorem tax deferrals for recreational and commercial working waterfronts for further staff review.

Lake Okeechobee Dike – received a staff emergency management report outlining plan of action for dealing with any catastrophic breach of the dike.

Historic Site – authorized the addition of The Wenger House site, located in unincorporated Delray Beach, to the Palm Beach County Register of Historic Places.

Mecca Farms – approved a lease agreement with Mecca Farms, Inc. to lease 215 acres of County-owned land in the Ag Reserve in order to continue the farming of row crops (south of Boynton Beach Boulevard and west of Highway 441/S.R. 7). The initial annual rent is $370,445, or $1,723 an acre.

Ag Reserve – selected the proposal from the Bowman Group to purchase a 75+-acre parcel of land on Smith Sundy Road in the Ag Reserve for $3,150,000 for the proposed uses of crop production, wholesale and retail nursery, green market, farmers market, produce stand and pasture or fallow land.
