TV SERIES ENCOURAGES STUDENTS TO PURSUE “INDUSTRIES OF THE MIND ” CAREERS

Contact: Mary Mcgee 561-355-4148

The Palm Beach County Film and Television Commission (FTC), in partnership with the Palm Beach County Economic Development Office and the Palm Beach County School District, is pleased to announce the successful completion of Industries of the Mind, a series of seven 30-second commercials featuring three men who struggle to find a job after dropping out of school.

The commercials, starring local comedians Frank Licari, Jesse Furman and Travis Thomas of “The Jove Improv,” give insight into the numerous options for young people in Palm Beach County who are planning to enter the county’s workforce. The commercials are produced and directed by filmmaker V. Alex Marquez.

The commercials are based on the 21st Century Palm Beach County Strategic Economic Plan findings that identified seven industry clusters for Palm Beach County’s future: Bioscience, Aerospace, Marine and Environmental Science, Information Technology, Tourism, Film Arts & Culture, and International Banking and Financial Services.

The commercials will serve as a recruitment tool to encourage students to seek out educational programs within one of those industry clusters, and to link the connection between industry clusters and student involvement.

“The world is now witnessing some of the greatest technological transformations in history,” said Kevin Johns, Palm Beach County Economic Development Director. “We want to popularize career pathways for our kids to be successful in these new technologies. Using the media to achieve that goal through a partnership between the FTC, the schools and the Industries of the Mind is part of our solution.”

At the end of each commercial, viewers are invited to visit “IndustriesoftheMind.net” to get more information on various industries.
The commercials will air on the school district’s cable network, The Education Network Channel 19, Palm Beach County’s Channel 20, and on City of West Palm Beach’s WPBTV Channel 18 starting on October 13, 2008.

Funding is provided through the FTC’s contract with the Economic Development Office.   Support for the commercials was provided by the Business Development Board of Palm Beach County, Palm Beach County Film and Television Institute, The Scripps Research Institute, Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne, Palm Beach County Cultural Council, Palm Beach County Convention and Visitors Bureau, Workforce Alliance, IBM, The Breakers Hotel, Hotel Biba, Loggerhead Marine life Center, Norton Museum of Art, Commerce Bank and Lockheed Martin.
