Resident Education Action Program

Palm Beach County, through the efforts of the Office of Community Revitalization (OCR), has just completed a new six-week, hands-on educational course on community revitalization and civic engagement, intended to help community residents who are interested in improving their neighborhood. The Resident Education to Action Program (REAP) supports the formation of neighborhood associations and empowers residents to seek a better quality of life. The theme for this year’s program, was “Unity in the Community!"

Through this course, residents gained knowledge of innovative ways to solve neighborhood issues. Course topics included:  Successful Neighborhood Revitalization; Approaches to Community Organizing and Strengthening; Sustaining Neighborhood Economics; Project Safe Neighborhood; Building Healthy Neighborhoods; Civic Engagement: A Call to Action. In addition, residents were given an overview of OCR's programs and initiatives, and learned more about County government, community resources and services that are available for neighborhood improvements.

One of the goals of REAP is to provide an opportunity for the residents of Palm Beach County to acquire a greater knowledge of and appreciation for government through active participation in the process. As part of the course, residents performed a mock commission meeting and showcased their strategies to local county and city officials. Participants were also given the opportunity to apply for a grant through the America’s Next Top Neighborhood Award Grant Program, and complete a community service project.

Sessions were facilitated using a variety of innovative techniques including group activities, lectures, guest speakers, individual outside work and oral presentations. This course, like all REAP courses, was open to youth and adults neighborhood leaders, and any interested citizens who like to learn about civic engagement, resident empowerment and available County and community resources to assist in neighborhood revitalization efforts. The course and all materials were free but a commitment for the entire six-week course was required.
