Description:
Evergreen sprawling shrub reaching to 26 feet in height, with multiple trunks, climbing stems longer. Leaves opposite, plain, glossy, leathery, oval-to-roundish-oblong, two-to-four inches long with short-pointed tips. Flowers are white, fragrant, in clusters where leaf is joined to stem, spreading in star-shaped fashion. Fruit a small roundish berry; green at first, maturing to shiny blue-black.
Habitat/Ecology:
Occurs in hammocks, pine flat woods, tropical hammocks, and open disturbed areas. Branches found sprawling over/enveloping native vegetation. Flowers year-round; fruits found from early summer into early winter; seeds dispersed by birds and raccoons.
