Community Programs

 
Therapeutic Recreation Programs offers a wide variety of programs and activities to residents with varying abilities. Those programs include:


FOR TEENS and ADULTS with DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITES
  • SUMMER CAMP for TEENS and YOUNG ADULTS
    This is a summer program for teens and young adults ages 13 to 22 with developmental disabilities. The campers will establish friendships and learn cooperation skills. This camp gives campers the opportunity to build self-esteem and self confidence, as well as facilitate the development of recreation and play skills. Participants set and achieve personal goals. Experiences include sports, games, community activities, arts, crafts, and special events.

  • SOFTBALL for TEENS and ADULTS
    For teens and adults ages 13 and up with developmental disabilities. During this program sport skills, game strategies, sportsmanship, and physical fitness are emphasized.

  • ANNUAL THEME PARK ADEVENTURE
    For teens and adults ages 13 and up with developmental disabilities. Participants will travel to and explore one of Florida's famous theme parks. This will increase social interaction among peers and provide respite for parents.

  • CAMP-OUT
    For teens and adults ages 13 and up with developmental disabilities. This overnight adventure includes a cookout, games, campfire, and story telling.

  • LEISURE SPECTRUM
    For teens and adults ages 13 and up with developmental disabilities. This program is offered at three (3) locations within Palm Beach County, North, Central and West. The goal of the program is to increase social skills through leisure participation.

  • STARDUST DANCE CLUB
    For teens and adults with developmental disabilities. This dance takes place one Sunday each month at The Club Managers Association of American Therapeutic Recreation Complex in Lake Worth. Join us for dancing, socializing, door prizes, and more.

  • WHAT'S COOKING
    For teens and adults from age 15 and up with developmental disabilities. Tired of eating at home and ordering take-outs? Sign up for this class and you will prepare a variety of meals, practice table manners, visit with friends, and take part in clean-up duties.

FOR TEENS and ADULTS with PHYSICAL DISABILITIES

  • ADAPTIVE GOLF
    For people of any age with physical disabilities. Participants will learn proper golf technique from a LPGA professional, Donna White. This Clinic includes four weeks of instruction and a four (4) hole tournament.

  • WHEELCHAIR RUGBY PRACTICE
    Adults interested in the fast paced, contact sport will learn the rules, regulations, and skills necessary to compete in this sport. They will also be able to improve their physical strength and endurance. Our local team, the South Florida Rattlers, practice on Sundays at one of The Club Managers Association of American Therapeutic Recreation Complex in The Murray, Meyer and Rachelle Grodetsky Family Foundation Athletic Center.

  • KNOCK and ROLL RUGBY TOURNAMENT
    Athletes from all over the country compete in this wheelchair rugby tournament. Our goal is to provide recreational opportunities and healthy competition through this three-day event.

SENIOR CITIZENS

  • FIT for LIFE
    A fitness program for residents in Nursing and/or Rehabilitation centers. Components of this program include social outings, low impact exercise, and nutrition. The program is designed to improve overall well-being and level of fitness.

  • SECOND WIND
    Nursing care facilities from around the county are encouraged to participate in this one-day event. Participants compete in walker/cane races, balloon volleyball, bocce, golf putting, and many more fun-filled activities. Medals and ribbons are awarded to individual competitors and trophies are awarded to the winning facilities.

MENTAL ILLNESS

  • MENTAL HEALTH FIELD DAY
    This is a free program for area mental health centers and their clients. The day consists of the 50-yard dash, tug-o-war, team softball, softball throw, team volleyball, checkers, agency feud, and a staff event. The program is designed to provide recreation participation, socialization, team play, light competition, and fun.

  • CREATIVE ARTS
    A program for people receiving services from one of Palm Beach County's mental health centers. Participants make various art projects. This program allows people with mental illness to express themselves creatively and feel pride in their accomplishments.

OTHER PROGRAMS

  • ADAPTIVE SWIM LESSONS
    All ages with disabilities. This program will provide swimming instruction adapted to meet the individual needs of each participant.

  • SAILING
    Participants ages 8 and up with disabilities will receive professional instruction and learn sailing terminology and the skills necessary to compete.

  • FAMILY SWIM
    Open Swim time for Individuals with disabilities and their family members. Relax, play and have fun splashing around with family and friends.

  • WATER AEROBICS
    Exercise program that focuses on physical fitness for seniors and adults with disabilities. Exercises assist with relieving joint pain, increasing mobility, and improving balance.

  • LAP SWIM
    Lap Lanes are available to the public for swimming. Please call (561) 966-7088 for current pool hours of operation.
