The Palm Beach County Natural Areas System is currently comprised of 35 environmentally sensitive lands totaling over 30,000 acres that are owned or leased by the County and managed as natural areas by the County's Department of Environmental Resources Management (ERM). These natural areas were acquired to preserve the rare and diverse natural ecosystems present on the sites along with the endangered, threatened, and rare species of plants and animals that inhabit them. The natural areas are available to the public for resource-based recreation, environmental education, scientific research, passive recreation such as nature walks, bird watching and photography. Thirteen of these natural areas have public use facilities such as a parking area, an accessible nature trail, informational kiosks, and hiking trails. Several have portable toilets. Trail Guides are available at the kiosk in the parking area at these sites. To get a copy of natural area maps and brochures, call the Palm Beach County Department of Environmental Resources Management at 561-233-2400 or go the website at www.pbcgov.com/erm. |
